I thought for a moment that someone had gotten the videos wrong and I was really watching part of Party Pilipinas. LOL. Time of my Life opens with the finale of a dance contest, the revelation night of The New Dancing Queen 2011. The show opens with two male dancers (Mark Herras and Rocco Nacino, in order of appearance). The two female contestants emerge with their backup dancers and show off their moves to the Black Eyed Peas version of Time of my Life. Then the music switches to the version from Dirty Dancing and a woman in a gold-colored dress (Jean Garcia), the show’s host, makes a grand entrance and goes through her number. Among the audience rocking to the beat, a woman and a man (Emilio Garcia) exchange smiles and applaud enthusiastically. In the wings, a man in a fedora (Raymond Bagatsing) also nods to the beat…
The dance ends and the host compliments the two girls, Shane (Kris Bernal) and Zaira (Ryza Cenon). She thanks the audience for their support for almost 20 years, and adds that this is the last time she’s dancing in front of them. As she speaks, Shane looks at the two boys in turn. The host adds that even if she’s leaving, someone will take her place– the new Dancing Queen…
While the announcement of the winner is drawn out for heightened suspense, Shane alternately looks at the two boys, who are positioned one to each side of the stage. Jason (Rocco Nacino) takes out a box containing a ring from his pocket and looks at it. After a moment– Patrick (Mark Herras) does the exact same thing. Before the announcement could be completed, however, the lights directly overhead explode. The two girls look up and the entire fixture begins to fall…
The light fixture falls, and everyone runs to help. And the next thing we know, we see two figures on stretchers being carried to an ambulance, and we hear women wailing the names of the two girls. The host cries Zaira’s name, and is being comforted by the man who was in the audience. The two boys look on in shock, and reporters rush in to ask what happened and if anyone knew who was responsible. The host sobs out that she doesn’t know how it came to this, and the security guards usher the reporters out. Patrick and Jason exchange glances. From afar, the man in the fedora watches unsmilingly.
…and we are taken back to 1991, where two dancers practice a tango. The man is the man in the fedora. As they dance, he’s pleading with his partner that they should discuss a certain matter, that what’s between them is now over. The woman, Martha, (second-lead actress extraordinaire Cherie Gil) angrily tells him that they’d been together for three years– it’s something that isn’t easy to forget. Besides, he loves her, right? She pleads with him to take her back, but he’s adamant– they’re done. Meanwhile, a woman, Lisa, the one who would later host the Dancing Queen contest, walks down the corridor towards the room where they’re practicing. The man disengages from his partner and walks away, and she tells him that it can’t be just like that. They have to get back together, they have to win the contest, and get rich, and fulfill their dreams. He says they should just practice. As they start dancing again, the woman reminds him of their plans– to get married and have a child. She tells him she loves him and asks him not to leave her.
The woman outside reaches the door and stands there watching them although they don’t notice. Another woman comes up behind her and asks what she’s doing.
Fred tells Martha he’s sorry but he doesn’t love her anymore. She doesn’t want to believe him and says she’d rather die if he left her, and he shouts at her not to talk that way. She mocks him, asking if he thinks she can’t do it. If he won’t come back to her, she’ll kill herself. He tells her to stop, to understand that it’s over, while she keeps insisting that it’s not, that he’s hers and hers alone. [She says "magkamatayan man tayo", literally "even if we both die."] She tries to cling to him but he removes her arms and leaves. The two women at the door retreat hastily as Fred exits the room with Martha running after him.
The second woman comments to Lisa that those two just keep quarreling, “because Martha is such a psycho.” ShepullsLisato
